22 year-old drunk woman rams car into six people in Chandigarh

A student of Punjab University has been booked for drunken driving in Chandigarh. She was under the influence of alcohol at that time and drove her Maruti Suzuki Alto into several people and other vehicles along the Sector 45 and 46 on Monday night.

The incident has left an elderly woman, Kamla Devi and a motorcyclist Pawan Thakur injured with multiple fractures. The injured people have been admitted in the Government Medical College and Hospital at Sector 32.

Two bikers who were witness to these accidents chased the car in an attempt to stop her but the girl reversed and hit another vehicle. The youths pursued their chase only to see the Maruti Alto hit 75-year-old Kamla Devi and then crushed a cycle as the cyclist left his cycle on the road on seeing the approaching vehicle and ran for cover.

The police claim that the girl admitted to having drinks with a woman friend at Sector 9 prior to the incident, while exact levels could not be ascertained till blood reports are revealed.

A case has been registered against the girl under Motor Vehicle Act and IPC for both drunken driving and rash driving. Initially it was a case of drunken driving alone but while the girl was at the Government Multi-Speciality Hospital at Sector 16, a relative stated that her drink had been spiked. They also stated that she was also raped, sending the cops into a tizzy.

The police went to the hospital to verify these allegations where the girl later retracted these statements on questioning. The girl’s family claims that she is a good and responsible driver and has demanded an inquiry into the matter on sequence of events that occurred prior to the girl getting into the vehicle.

Drunk driving has caused many deaths on Indian roads. Time and again, we appeal to our readers to do not drink and drive.
