7 lakh Honda City cars sold in India, and counting

It’s a big moment with 7 lakh Honda City cars sold in India since being first introduced here back in 1998. Now in its fourth-generation avatar, Honda City has a great fan following. For Honda, India is the largest and most important market for Honda City. At present, Honda City sales in India accounts to 25 percent of global City sales.

Speaking on the 7 lakh Honda City cars milestone, Yoichiro Ueno, President & CEO, Honda Cars India Ltd said, “Honda City is our bestseller model in India and the only premium sedan to achieve cumulative sales of 7 lakh units in the country. With a strong legacy of four generations, the City brand has evolved with the changing tastes and aspirations of our customers. We thank all our City customers for their patronage of the brand.”

“India has always been a strong market for Honda City and currently accounts for 25% of its worldwide sales. It’s a complete package of sporty looks with advanced safety, superb driving performance, high fuel efficiency, best comfort and a rich equipment list. We hope the Honda City will retain its much-loved brand status in the years to come,” he added.

4th Honda City sales crossed the 2.5 lakh units milestone back in June. In the 4 months since 20,000 units have been sold at an average of 5,000 units sold each month. Honda City sedan is sold in over 60 countries. Cumulative sales stands at 3.6 million units. Currently in its 4th generation, the cumulative 7 lakh Honda City units sales milestone journey is as follows. Having first gone into production in January 1998, 100,000 sales were reported in March 2005, 200,000 sales in October 2007, 300,000 sales in March 2010, 400,000 sales in September 2012, 500,000 sales in November 2014, 600,000 sales in February 2016, and 700,000 sales and counting in October 2017.

1st generation City was sold between 1998 – 2003 and 59,378 units were reported in cumulative sales. 2nd gen City was sold between 2003 – 2008 with 177,742 units sold. 3rd gen City was sold between 2008 – 2013, and 192,939 units were reported sold. While the first 3 gen cars were available as petrol variants, with the introduction of 4th generation City in 2014, that changed. To date, 269,941 units of petrol/diesel 4th gen Honda City units have been sold in India.
