In yet another case of rash and negligent driving, a young woman has lost her life. This time however, the victim was wearing a helmet despite which she suffered severe head injuries and died.
Arundhati, a resident of Narhe, was returning home on Sunday afternoon when her Honda Activa scooter was hit from behind by a Santro being driven by Mukund Abhyankar on the busy Bhandarkar Road in Pune City. Arundhati was wearing a helmet at the time of the mishap but suffered severe head injuries and while she was immediately removed to hospital, she was declared dead on arrival.
Abhyankar, (78), Group Chairman of Cosmos Cooperative Bank was at the wheel of his Santro while he was accompanied by his wife who was sitting in the passenger seat. He allegedly hit the victim’s scooter from behind but was apparently unaware of the impact as he drove off from the scene.
He was caught a kilometer and a half from the spot after locals informed the police. Abhyankar was taken to the police chowki at Prabhat Road and an FIR was lodged against him. Even as Abhyankar has denied that his car hit Arundhati, the CCTV footage in the area is being assessed and final reports are awaited.
Abhyankar has been booked 304A (causing death due to negligence), 338 (causing hurt) and 279 (rash driving) of the Indian Penal Code. He is being produced in court on Monday while he was not arrested by the police due to his age.
