Hyundai Santro sales higher than Tata Tiago – Behind Maruti WagonR, Celerio

Launched on 23rd October, the new Santro was already being dispatched to dealers across India even before its launch. Thanks to this, the first month sales of new Santro have peaked to 8,535 units. In India, the monthly sales are calculated On the basis of the units dispatched to dealers, and not the one’s actually sold to consumer.

New Santro bookings exceeded 28,800 units, the highest achieved by any brand in the segment. With sales of 8,535 units, the Hyundai Santro has overtaken Tata Tiago (7,549 units) and Renault Kwid (6,035 units). If sales and bookings go as per plan, sales of the Santro will also edge past that of the Maruti Celerio and Maruti WagonR, of which a total of 9,260 units and 10,655 units respectively – were sold in the same period under consideration.

The new Hyundai Santro hatchback has made an immediate impact on buyers in the small car segment in the country. It is priced at Rs 3,89,900 for the base model going up to Rs 5,64,900 for its top end variant. However, these are introductory prices and only offered for the first 50,000 customers, following which there is likely to be a substantial price hike.

2018 Hyundai Santro gets many segment first features among which are a 7” touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay & Mirror Link smartphone connectivity, keyless entry, rear parking camera and power windows. It also complies with new safety regulations coming into effect in India with standard features which include ABS, EBD, driver side airbag for the base variant while the top end variant gets dual airbags, rear parking sensor and impact sensing auto door unlock.

2018 Hyundai Santro continues to follow the tall boy design seen on its earlier counterpart. It measures 3,610 mm in length, 1,645 mm in width, and 1,560 mm in height while wheelbase measures 2,400 mm. It sits on 14” steel wheels and suspension is via MacPherson strut with a stabilizer bar in the front and a Coupled Torsion Beam at the rear.

Hyundai Santro is powered by petrol and CNG engine options. The 1.1 liter, 4 cylinder engine offers 69 PS at 5,500 rpm and peak torque of 10.4 kgm at 4,500 rpm when run on petrol while on CNG, this goes down to 59 PS at 5,500 rpm and 8.6 kgm at 4,500 rpm. The petrol engine is mated to a 5 speed manual and 5 speed SmartAuto AMT while the CNG engine only gets a manual transmission. Of total sales of the Hyundai Santro in October, it was found that 21% share of bookings were for the CNG Santro.
