New Maruti Ertiga 1.5 D vs Mahindra Marazzo vs Honda BRV – Comparison

Even though Maruti Suzuki has announced discontinuation of all diesel cars from April 1, 2020 onwards, the company has gone ahead and launched Ertiga with new 1.5 diesel engine. Developed in-house, Maruti’s new diesel engine was first featured on Ciaz facelift launched last month.

Here’s a quick comparison between Maruti Suzuki Ertiga 1.5-litre diesel vs. rivals Mahindra Marazzo, Renault Lodgy and Honda BR-V to understand which car delivers the best value for money. New Maruti Ertiga 1.5 D vs Mahindra Marazzo vs Honda BRV.

Engine (diesel) – Maruti Ertiga’s new 1.5-litre engine generates 95 PS of max power and 225 Nm of max torque. It replaces the old Fiat-sourced 1.3-litre diesel engine that makes 90 PS power and 200 Nm torque. With 5 PS more power and 25 Nm more torque, new Ertiga diesel will definitely improve drive dynamics for users.

Talking about rivals, Mahindra Marazzo, Renault Lodgy and Honda BR-V all come with 1.5-litre engines, mated to manual transmission. However, power and torque output is different.

Mahindra Marazzo leads the pack with max power of 122 PS and max torque of 300 Nm. Renault’s Lodgy’s 1.5-litre diesel engine comes in two states of tune, delivering 85/110PS and 200/245Nm. Honda BR-V has around the same numbers, 100 PS of power and 200 Nm of torque.

In terms of fuel efficiency, Ertiga new 1.5-litre diesel variant takes the first place with mileage of 24.20 kmpl. This is slightly lower than Ertiga 1.3L diesel variant that makes 25.47 kmpl. This variant will still be sold till stocks last.

Renault Lodgy and Honda BR-V fuel efficiency numbers are quite close at 21.04/19.98 kmpl and 21.09 kmpl respectively. Marazzo being the most powerful in the group naturally has the lowest fuel efficiency of 17.60 kmpl. Speaking about safety, of the Marazzo and Lodgy have been crash tested. Marazzo scored 4 star safety, while Lodgy scored 0 star.

Price – Maruti Ertiga 1.5-litre diesel is priced in the range of Rs 9.86 lakh to Rs 11.20 lakh. Its top spec variant is thus the most affordable in this group. The cheapest base variant is that of Renault Lodgy, priced at Rs 8.63 lakh. Costliest base variant is that of Honda BR-V, priced at Rs 11.86 lakh, whereas costliest top-spec variant is Mahindra Marazzo, priced at Rs 14.59 lakh.

Most other features on-board new Maruti Ertiga diesel are the same as earlier. It remains to be seen if the new 1.5-litre diesel engine will be introduced in other Maruti cars or Ertiga was just an exception. If Maruti decides to go ahead, Brezza as well as S-Cross would qualify as strong contenders to get the new diesel unit next.
