Tata Nexon crash tested again – Scores 5 star rating, safer than Maruti Brezza 4 star

Tata Nexon becomes the first Indian car to be awarded five stars by Global NCAP. Tata Nexon is made in India, and sales have been promising. Tata Nexon secured five stars for Adult Occupant Protection, and three stars for Child Occupant Protection.

The new result is an improvement on the Tata nexon’s previous rating at which time it was awarded 4 stars. Following the classification, Tata Motors has improvised on a number of parameters to secure a higher and better rating.

There’s now a Seat Belt Reminder (SBR) for driver and passenger as a standard feature across all variants. Nexon also underwent a side impact test to meet UN95 side impact protection requirements

Safety equipment includes front seatbelt pretensions, driver frontal airbag, front passenger frontal airbag, SBR, Isofix anchorages, and ABS (4 channel). There are no side body, head or driver knee airbags.

Mr. Mayank Pareek, President – PVBU, Tata Motors, said, “The Indian car-buyers are increasingly rating safety as one of the topmost parameters while making a car purchase. We are elated to receive the highest ever safety rating from Global NCAP, for the Nexon. The Global NCAP results are a reflection of our commitment towards keeping Safety as the first priority. With these test results, the Nexon becomes the first car in the country to achieve a full 5-star adult safety rating and emerges as India’s Safest Car, in terms of crash safety.”

Protection for driver and passenger’s head and neck is graded good. Driver and passenger’s chest secured adequate protection. Driver and passenger’s knee protection is good. A stable bodyshell is capable of withstanding further loadings. Footwell area is stable. Child seat for a 3 year old is installed forward facing with ISOFIX and top tether to prevent excessive forward movement at impact impact with good protection for head, and marginal protection to chest.

18 month old CRS (child restraint system) is installed with ISOFIX and leg support rearward facing with good protection for head and chest. Installation instructions on both child seats are not permanently attached to the seat. The new rating is valid for all Nexon SUV’s produced as from December 7th, 2018 (from VIN MAT627165JLP51255). This makes Tata Nexon rating better than rival Maruti Brezza and Ford EcoSport. Maruti Brezza scored 4 star. Ford EcoSport has not been crash tested.

David Ward, Global NCAP Secretary General said, “This is a huge landmark for car safety in India. Congratulations to Tata Motors for achieving India’s first five star rating for adult occupant protection. The Nexon was engineered in India and this shows the huge capability of the domestic industry to achieve excellence in safety design and performance. With the Nexon, Tata have shown the global car industry that to achieve five stars you can ‘Make in India’. Global NCAP is looking forward to many more Indian five star cars and further improvements in both pedestrian protection and crash avoidance.”
