April 2017 Two Wheeler Sales Report – Hero, Honda, Bajaj, TVS, Royal Enfield, Yamaha, Suzuki, Mahindra

Hero MotoCorp

Hero MotoCorp Ltd. (HMCL) sold 591,306 two-wheelers in April 2017, down 3.5 percent from 6,12,739 units sold in April 2016. Business was rife in March end owing to transition from BS III to BS IV vehicles. With the current marriage season in play, Hero looks forward to robust retail sales in May.

Starting this month, Hero two wheeler prices have been increased by Rs 500 to Rs 2200 to partially offset commodity cost increase.

For Q1 2017, Hero MotoCorp was left dealing with BS-III vehicles that couldn’t be sold April onward, and were sold in the last week of March at a reasonably discounted price, so, the company could reduce its unsold stock. As a result, revenue impact was to the tune of 193.28 crore.

Hero MotoCorp did witness a dip in net profit for Q4 2016-17. Stand-alone net profit was down to 717.75 crore from 833.29 crore in Q4 2015-16. The company will invest 2,500 crore towards product development and capacity expansion over the next two years.

Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India

Honda 2Wheelers India sold 578,929 two-wheelers in April 2017, at 34 percent sales growth this is the company’s highest every monthly performance. HMSI aims at business of 6 million units in FY2017-18 at 20 percent growth.

Yadvinder Singh Guleria, Senior Vice President – Sales and Marketing, Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India Pvt. Ltd. says sales were on the back of demand for Honda’s upgraded BS-IV portfolio. In the domestic market, Honda two-wheeler sales were up 33 percent with 551,884 units sold. For the first time ever, HMSI recorded over 30 percent market share.

Demand for automatic scooter sales led the way with 40 percent growth with 3,68,618 units sold. Motorcycles sales growth was reported at 22 percent with 183,266 units sold. Exports were up 60 percent over April 2016 with 27,045 units sent overseas.

Honda rolled out its 1,50,00,000th (1.5 crore) Activa. A record for any two wheeler automatic scooter sold in the country.

TVS Motor Company

TVS Motor Company reports 8 percent sales growth for April 2017. Total sales are up at 246,310 units from 227,096 units sold in April 2016.

Total two-wheeler sales increased by 8.4% from 222,350 units recorded in April 2016 to 241,007 units in April 2017. Domestic two-wheeler sales grew by 4.0% increasing from 197,692 units in April 2016 to 205,522 units in April 2017.

Scooters sales were up by 28.6 percent to 81,443 units, up from 63,341 units sold in April 2016. Motorcycles sales growth was reported at 10.4 percent to 99,890 units sold, up from 90,491 units sold in April 2016.

Two-wheeler exports growth is reported at 43.9 percent at 35,485 units registered, up from 24,658 units in April 2016.

Bajaj Auto Limited

Bajaj Auto domestic sales decline stood at 19 percent with 1,61,930 units sold, down from 2,00,433 units sold in April 2016. Exports were up at 44 percent with 1,32,002 units registered, up from 91,465 units sold in April 2016. In all, Bajaj Auto motorcycles performance was flat at 1 percent sales growth with 2,93,932 units sold, up from 2,91,898 units sold in April 2016.

Royal Enfield

Royal Enfield sold a total of 60,142 units (including exports) in April 2017 to register 25 percent sales growth, up from 48,197 units in April 2016. Exports were up by 36 percent as the company exported 1578 units in April 2017, up from 1,160 units in April 2016.

Royal Enfield now has second direct distribution subsidiary outside India, in Brazil, the fourth biggest two wheeler market globally. Royal Enfield Brazil sells to dealers and takes care of front end development and support activity in Brazil. Before Latin America, Royal Enfield North America (RENA) was set up in 2015 with a strong presence in Colombia.

Domestic sales were up 25 percent. Royal Enfield sold 58,564 units last month, up from 47,037 units sold in April 2016. The company pit in on top in the 350cc engine segment.

Yamaha Motor India Sales Pvt. Ltd

India Yamaha Motor Pvt. Ltd. registered domestic (including Nepal) sales growth of 7.66 percent in April 2017 at 68827 units sold, up from 63,927 units sold in April 2016.

New bikes variants, an expanded product portfolio, and focus on tier-II and III cities to increase their market reach has works towards sales growth.

Roy Kurian, Senior Vice President, Sales and Marketing, Yamaha Motor India Sales Pvt. Ltd. says sales growth is despite industry changes in regard to BSIII vehicles. Surge in scooter sales is expected with growth in rural markets.

Suzuki India

Suzuki Motorcycle India reported 43 percent domestic sales increase at 36,289 units sold in April 2017 over 25,343 units sold in April 2016. Exports from India are up at 42 percent at 7,535 units from 5,290 units sold in April 2016. Cumulative growth stands at 43 percent at 43,842 units in April 2017, up from 30,648 units in April 2016.
