The laser spot for high beams increase range substantially, which is ideal for a supercar. Audi R8 LMX lights are activated at a speed of 60 kmph (37 mph) and above for higher visibility range to optimise safety. A laser module in the headlight generates a cone of light with two times the range of an all LED headlight. A module comprises 4 high-power laser diodes. At a diameter of 300 micrometers, a blue laser beam with a wavelength of 450 nanometers is generated., and transformed into roadworthy white light with colour temperature of 5,500 Kelvin.
A driver can recognise contrast easily, and the use of an intelligent camera based sensor system ensures headlamps detect other road users and actively adjust light pattern to avoid dazzle. Audi R8 LMX wears a fixed rear spoiler to increase downforce on rear axle. Side flics, engine compartment cover, exterior mirror housings, side blades, large rear wing and diffuser are in matt carbon finish. Single frame grille, front air intakes and rear outlet grille are 3/4 finished in titanium grey. Sports exhaust system includes high-gloss black tailpipes.
