Azzam is the largest yacht at 590 ft, but not costliest
Azzam is the new mega yacht which is built for a mystery client at a cost of £400m (INR 3341 crores or $612m or €469m). Azzam (above) measures 590 ft and is about 57 ft longer than the Roman Abramovich super yacht Eclipse which till date reigned supreme.
Azzam has taken a total of four years to build, and was launched in Germany last week. Ownership is still unknown though rumors suggest that it is to be in possession of a Saudi Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Alsaud (the 12th richest person). Both, Prince Alsaud and Roman had come toe-to-toe, about 1.5 years back when they both arrived at Millionaire’s Quay, Antibes, near Nice, south-eastern France with their respective yachts, but parking was only available for one. At that time, the Prince was travelling with his 265ft yacht.
Coming back to the yacht of the week, Azzam is longer than 12 double decker buses and is stated to have top speed of over 30 knots or 35 mph. Azzam which means ‘dedication’ in Arabic, is the most complex and challenging of all super yachts. It is built by Nauta Yachts and has been constructed in Bremen by Lurssen. Interiors of this super yacht is still shrouded in mystery but it is revealed that the running of the yacht will require a staff of 50 strong, reports DailyMail.
Delivery to its rightful owners is pegged for later this year. Though Eclipse (below) has lost the record, it will still be the costliest yacht, with experts valuing the Chelsea owner’s leisure vehicle at over $1.5 billion, which is approximately three times the price of Azzam. According to Wikipedia, “Eclipse has two helicopter pads, 1 submarine, 3 landing boats, 24 guest cabins, two swimming pools, several hot tubs, disco hall and a missile defense system.”
