Bajaj Auto, third largest manufacturer of motorcycles in the world and second largest in India continues to rival Hero MotoCorp. Their recent claim is that sales of Discover have far surpassed that of Hero MotoCorp’s Splendor in the month of September 2012. However, counter claims by Hero MotoCorp have refuted these reports saying that it is their Splendor that is still the most popular and largest selling motorcycle in the world.
Bajaj Auto have confirmed sales of Discover during the month of September 2012 which including exports have reached 1,22,698 units as compared to sales of Splendor which has touched 1,21,018 units . In local markets however, Hero MotoCorp sales of Splendor have reached 1.16 lakhs as against sales of Discover which stood at 1.11 lakhs. This shows that Bajaj Auto is gaining in exports, a market which Hero is likely to overtake and with it regain its No.1 position.
To retain their hold in the market, Bajaj Auto have announced that there will be no price hikes for the coming 2 to 3 months despite the fact that a number of auto companies are increasing prices of their four wheelers citing higher input costs.
In the meanwhile share prices of Bajaj Auto were down to Rs 1761 when the market closed yesterday, as the company reported a 15% drop in motorcycle sales. This stood at 315,314 units during the month of September while a year ago in the same month this figure was 371,208 units. Bajaj Auto is now targeting 1,30,000 unit sales of Discover for the month of October and will raise this target to 1,40,000 units in November expecting to do well during the upcoming festive season.
