2018 once again saw Maruti Suzuki in a top spot on the best seller list with 12 cars in the list of top 25. Hyundai followed with 4 cars on the list while other automakers such as Tata, Mahindra, Toyota, Renault and Honda saw a few entrants.
Maruti Suzuki ruled the charts of best selling 25 cars in 2018 with its DZire, Alto, Swift, Baleno, Brezza and WagonR claiming the top 6 spots on the list. Of these, Alto registered 0% growth along with the WagonR which saw a 9% dip in sales primarily due to the fact that the new WagonR was poised for launch.
Maruti Suzuki Celerio at No. 10 also noted 0% growth while Maruti Omni at No. 12 registered 2% growth though the Eeco, at No. 14 saw growth to the extent of 17% from 72,506 units sold in 2017 to 84,565 units sold in the past year. Marui Suzuki Ertiga, at No. 18 also registered 17% degrowth in 2018 from 68,354 units sold in 2017 to 56,404 units sold in 2018.
Maruti Suzuki Ciaz and Ignis, sold via NEXA showrooms, and at Nos 21 and 23 on the list of best sellers in 2018 also noted a dip in sales by 18% and 10% respectively. Ciaz sales dipped from 61,967 units in 2017 to 50,759 units in 2018 while Ignis sales dipped from 48,285 units sold in 2017 to 43,602 units sold in the past year.
Hyundai Motors also saw 4 cars on the list of 25 bestselling vehicles in the past year. Hyundai i20 Elite, i10 Grand and Creta were at Nos. 7,8 and 9 while the Hyundai Verna was in the No. 24 spot. Except for the i10 Grand, all the three Hyundai models registered positive growth over the past year. i10 Grand sales dipped 13% from 1,54,747 units sold in 2017 to 1,34,249 units sold in 2018. Verna sales were at their highest having registered a 64% increase in sales from 25,904 units sold in 2017 to 42,605 units sold last year.
Tata Motors had the Tiago and Nexon on this list. Tiago sales surged 30% from 71,111 units sold in 2017 to 92,286 units sold in the last year while sales of the Tata Nexon, at No. 19, increased a whopping 273% from 14,062 units sold in 2017 to 52,519 units sold in the past year.
Honda Cars saw the Amaze and City on this list at Nos.16 and 25 respectively. Amaze sales increased 139% from 28,314 units sold in 2017 to 67,563 units sold last year while City sales dipped 33% from 62,573 units sold in 2017 to 42,045 units sold last year.
Mahindra and Mahindra, leading SUV makers in the country, had the Bolero and Scorpio on the list at Nos.13 and 22 respectively. The Bolero recorded positive growth of 5% from 81,778 units sold in 2017 to 85,464 units sold in 2018 while sales of the Scorpio dipped 6% from 52,103 units sold in 2017 to 49,063 units sold in the past year.
Toyota, Renault and Ford each had a single offering on the list of top 25 best sellers in the past year. Toyota Innova Crysta at No. 15 saw sales increase 8% from 72,349 units in 2017 to 78,130 units sold in the past year. Renault Kwid, at No.17, saw sales dip 28% from 92,440 units sold in 2017 to 66,815 units sold in the past year while Ford EcoSport at No.20, saw sales surge 15% from 45,146 units sold in 2017 to 51,973 units sold in 2018.
