Best selling cars of India for Oct 2018 – Hyundai Santro enters the list

Indian car market has witnessed a swarm of car launches in recent times, but when we look at sales figures for October 2018, the competition seems to be fairly one-sided. That’s because the top 10 slots for October 2018 have all been taken by only two carmakers – Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai. And among the two, Maruti Suzuki has the leadership position with 7 of the top 10 slots to its name.

Going by numbers, Maruti Alto is at the first place with sales of 22,180 units in October 2018. Alto is the only car to have registered sales of more than 20 thousand units. At number 2 is Maruti Baleno with sales of 18,675 units. At third and fourth place are Maruti Dzire (17,404) and Maruti Swift (17,215), respectively.

At fifth place is Maruti Vitara Brezza with sales of 15,832 units. Brezza has registered 10% growth, as compared to last month. It had got 4-star rating in Global NCAP test. Sixth, seventh and eighth place are taken by Hyundai Elite i20 (13,290), Hyundai Grand i10 (11,820) and Hyundai Creta (11,702), respectively. Hyundai has consistently featured in the top 10 list and there are no surprises here.

All three Hyundai cars have registered positive MoM growth. At number 9 is Maruti Wagon R with sales of 10,655 units. This is actually a 20% MoM loss, which is mainly due to Santro’s grand entry. At number 10 is Maruti Celerio with sales of 9,260 units.

Number 11 is the surprise entry by Hyundai Santro, registering sales of 8,535 units in the launch month itself. With Santro’s entry, Tata Tiago has been shifted to number 12 position, with sales of 7,549 units. This translates into MoM loss of around 10%.

Mahindra Bolero comes in at 13th position with sales of 7,222 units. This is followed by Maruti Omni (6,954) and Maruti Eeco (6,714), both of which have registered negative MoM growth of 5% and 9%, respectively.

The only Toyota featured in the list is Toyota Innova Crysta that comes at 16th place with sales of 6,700 units. Next is Renault Kwid with sales of 6,035 units. With 9% MoM growth, Kwid has been instrumental in keeping the hopes alive for Renault in India.

At eighteenth spot is Honda Amaze (5,542), registering a major loss of 34% MoM. Nineteenth and twentieth position is taken by Tata Nexon (4,608) and Mahindra Scorpio (4,603), with MoM growth of 7% and 17% respectively.

The only Ford car in the list is Ford EcoSport at 21st position, registering sales of 3,957 units. Next is Maruti Ciaz (3,892), which is another surprise, as it translates into MoM loss of 38%. However, Ciaz is still the bestselling car in C-segment.

At 23rd is Mahindra Marazzo (3,810), a 35% growth over last month. Next is Honda City (3,612), which is even more impressive with MoM growth of 41%. At 25th spot is Maruti S-Cross (3,317), registering MoM growth of 10%.

Other popular names such as Jeep, Nissan, Skoda and Volkswagen are missing from the top 25 list for October 2018. Indian customers generally like to go with established brands, something that explains the predominance of Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, Tata Motors and Mahindra. Other carmakers would have to work really hard to gain a solid foothold in the Indian car market.
