Honda Scooter and Motorcycle India commanded the list of best selling scooters during the month of May 2019. The Honda Activa, Dio and Grazia featured on the list at No. 1, 4 and 9 with the Honda Activa once again in a top spot.
Sales of the Honda Activa dipped 19.72 percent from 2,72,475 units sold in May 2018 to 2,18,734 units sold in the past month. Honda Activa 125 BS VI compliant scooter was unveiled earlier this month which could start at Rs.65,000.
Honda Dio saw positive sales in the past month with a 42.38 percent increase. Sales in May 2019 stood at 46,840 units up from 32,899 units sold in May 2018. Though the Honda Activa is the highest selling scooter, the Dio has managed to clock sales of 30 lakh units ever since going on sale in 2002.
Honda Grazia rides in at No.9 on the list of best selling scooters in May 2019 saw a 4.60 percent dip in sales. Sales in May 2018 which stood at 12,068 units dipped to 11,513 units in the past month.
TVS Motors had the Jupiter and Ntorq on the list of top 10 best selling scooters in May 2019. The Jupiter commanded a No.2 position with a 2.24 percent dip in sales. Sales in May 2019 stood at 56,797 units down from 58,098 units sold in May 2018. The Ntorq at No. 5, however noted positive sales with its youthful appeal. Sales increased 42.97 percent from 14,695 units sold in May 2018 to 21,010 units sold in the past month.
At No. 3 on the list was the Suzuki Access 125 with sales increased by 11.24 percent from 46,217 units sold in May 2018 to 51,414 units sold in May 2019.
Hero MotoCorp had the Destini and Maestro scooters on this list of best sellers in May 2019. The Destini scooter at No. 6 on the list is a late entrant into the 125 cc segment and the first ever 125 cc scooter from Hero. However, its performance shows that it is a significant player in the burgeoning 125 cc scooter segment in the country. It was launched in the country in October 2018 and May 2019 sales stood at 16,752 units.
Hero Maestro at No. 8 saw a 35.63 percent dip in sales. Sales which stood at 23,509 units in May 2018 went down to 15,132 units in the past month.
India Yamaha Motors had the Fascino scooter on the list of best sellers in May 2019 with a No. 7 position among the top 10 best sellers. Sales increased 2.61 percent from 15,132 units sold in May 2018 to 15,459 units sold in the past month. Earlier this year the company introduced the 2019 Yamaha Fascino with Unified Braking system (UBS) and new maintenance free battery which increased its appeal. Yamaha also had the Ray scooter at No. 10 with sales down 6.35 percent. Sales which stood at 11,660 units in May 2019 dipped to 10,920 units in May 2019.
Overall sales in the scooter segment also fell 4.56 percent from total sales of 4,86,753 in May 2018 to 4,64,571 units sold in the past month. Figures by SIAM show that production of scooters also dipped in the month of May 2019 by 11.52 percent as compared to May 2018 while exports also saw a notable reduction during the past month.
