BMW 2 Series convertible unveiled at 2014 Paris Motor Show

BMW 2 Series Cabriolet 02 frontAs third model in BMW 2 Series lineup, BMW 2 Series Convertible joins 2 Series Coupé and 2 Series Active Tourer, also as a replacement to 1 Series Convertible. Latter is known to be the most successful car in its class, with over 130,000 units global sales. 1 Series Convertible was also the only car with rear-wheel drive among its competitors. 2 Series Convertible will come with four BMW TwinPower Turbo engines, which will include new 2.0 litre diesel mill for 220d trim and an M Performance variant M235i for the first time in a BMW convertible. Other two are 2.0 litre petrol engines, 220i and 228i. Eight speed automatic transmission is optional on every model.

New 2.0 litre diesel engine generates 14 hp power and 50 Nm torque more than the previous unit, mated to six speed manual transmission. It is built on aluminium crankcase with thermally joined liners to reduce internal friction. It also gets balancer shafts which eliminate vibrations. Improved turbocharger and enhanced common-rail direct-injection system operating at about 2,000 bar, augment efficiency of the new engine. The 2.0 litre unit on BMW 2 Series convertible is also lighter and quieter than its predecessor.

BMW 2 Series Cabriolet spec sheetM Performance version, 2 Series Cabriolet M235i, will house a 3.0 litre six cylinder engine that produces 326 hp and 450 Nm. Peak torque is achieved from as low as 1,300 rpm, with help from twin-scroll turbocharging, VALVETRONIC variable valve timing, high-precision centrally positioned multi-hole direct injectors and Double-VANOS variable camshaft timing. All these result in sports car like performance, enabling 0 – 100 kmph (62 mph) sprint in just 5.2 seconds with manual transmission and 5.0 seconds in auto variant.

BMW 2 Series Cabriolet will launch in February 2015, at starting price of £29,180 OTR (Rs. 28.92 lakhs approx.).
