BMW Motorrad plans local assembly in India by 2016, at Chennai plant

According to Autocar India, BMW Motorrad is planning to start SKD operations in India. Importing motorcycles in Semi Knocked Down state, price of those models could be brought down to an extent enough to improve its competition.

Premium variants of Triumph Tiger XCx and XRx are slated for launch on 12th March, 2015. Entire range of Ducati motorcycles will deploy on 18th, and first five models of DSK Benelli will go on sale on 19th.

Maintaining a super premium status is one thing, given the increasing concentration of superbikes in India in recent months, it’s the right time BMW shifts lane and puts up a fight to churn out volumes. International motorcycle giants are lining up to start exploring Indian market, given the good track record of two-wheeler market in the country. The market seems to be maturing fast, with increasing acceptance for higher displacement and higher priced motorcycles.

The SKD kits of BMW bikes would be assembled at its luxury car plant in Chennai. BMW F700 and F800 adventure bikes are the first models expected to be locally assembled. After the plan is finalised and revealed officially, production would commence by late 2015 or early 2016.
