BMW India 2013 plans: New car launches, prices, strengthen dealer network, sales and investments

At the new X6 launch in Faridabad yesterday, BMW India President, Philipp von Sahr revealed future plans of his company. Starting with BMW car launches for 2013, Mr Sahr said that they will be launching three new cars in India, new X1, facelifted 7 Series and the all new 1 Series hatchback, to compete with the Mercedes Benz A Class, which too is going to arrive in India next year. He also said that they will be expanding their CKD product range.

BMW X1 compact SUV will be the first one to arrive, Mr Sahr did not specify a date, but he said it will happen during early 2013. Next to arrive will be the facelifted 7 Series, BMW’s epitome of luxury. New BMW 7 Series will be launched in India by April 2013. After these two launches, BMW India will introduce their smallest and most affordable car ever, the 1 Series hatchback.

BMW India will also start local production of the 7 Series and 1 Series from their plant in Chennai. Local production of BMW 7 Series will commence from mid 2013 while that of 1 Series hatch will commence from end 2013. Local production of 7 Series might push competitors Audi India and Mercedes Benz India to think about locally producing A8 and S Class respectively.

By the end of next year, BMW India plant will be producing 1 Series, 3 Series, 5 Series, 7 Series, X1 and X3, adds Mr Sahr. BMW India will also invest heavily in their dealer network to increase quality of service offered to their customers. Mr Sahr adds, by 2014 end BMW India sales outlet will be increased to 50 from present 29.

Speaking about discounts and car prices and Mr Sahr says, “BMW India will be increasing prices of their cars form Jan 2013. Unlike our competition, we will not offer discount on cars to increase sales. We are still the No 1 luxury car company in India with Jan to Oct 2012 sales figures of 7,389 units.” Audi India is second placed at 7,267 units, behind by just 122 units, while Mercedes India is yet to reveal their sales figures for the period.
