Tata Motors has climbed from 4th and 3rd positions in October and November to 2nd in December 2024, sidelining Hyundai and Mahindra
After peaking in October, automotive market usually witnesses a decline in the month of November after the festive season is over. Where December is concerned, buyers usually wait for the start of a new year for automotive purchases. This will aid them during re-selling as the registration and purchase has happened in the new calendar year.
December 2024 was no different. There was an 8.60% MoM decline when compared to sales numbers from November 2024. However, these 14 car brands combined, registered an overall 11.89% YoY growth, which is a promising sign.
Car Sales Dec 2024
At the top of this list containing 14 mainstream car brands, we have Maruti Suzuki with 40.49% market share like clockwork. The company clocked 1,30,115 units last month while registering 24.18% YoY growth gaining 34,141 units in volume and 7.92% MoM decline losing 30,247 units in volume when compared to 1,04,778 units sold a year ago and 1,41,312 units sold a month before.
Notably, Tata Motors has climbed the ladder of success rapidly. From 4th position in October and 3rd position in November, Tata has secured 2nd position in December 2024. With 44,221 units sold, Tata Tata registered 1.73% YoY growth with 750 units gained in volume and 6.04% MoM decline with 2,842 units in volume. In this list, Tata holds a firm 13.76% market share.
Sales numbers from Hyundai and Mahindra were pretty neck and neck at 42,208 and 41,424 units with 13.13% and 12.89% market shares respectively. While Hyundai fell into the red completely with 1.27% YoY and 12.52% MoM decline, Mahindra registered YoY growth of 17.78% and MoM decline of 10.38%. Toyota sold 24,887 units and registered 16.45% YoY growth and 1.18% MoM decline, while holding a market share of 7.74%.
Kia, MG and Honda took 6th, 7th and 8th spots on this list with 8,957, 7,516 and 6,825 units sold last month respectively. But they all registered unique sales trends. Starting with Kia, it registered a rather heavy 28.55% YoY and 56.52% MoM decline. Honda saw 13.63% YoY decline, but gained 36.36% MoM. MG, however, fell in the green completely with 70.82% YoY and 24.87% MoM growth. Where market shares are concerned, Kia held 2.79%, MG 2.34% and Honda 2.12%.
Renault Saw YoY and MoM growth
Volkswagen and Skoda sales fell close to each other at 4,787 and 4,554 units with similar sales patterns with market shares at 1.49% and 1.42% respectively. Volkswagen and Skoda saw 2.90% and 2.45% YoY declines along with 57.83% and 57.8% MoM growth respectively. Renault and Nissan sold 2,881 and 2,118 units last month respectively, but with opposite sales trends.
Renault saw 44.92% YoY and 2.49% MoM growth, while Nissan saw 1.49% YoY and 9.56% MoM decline. Lastly, at 13th and 14th places, we have Stellantis brands Citroen and Jeep with 566 and 286 units sold respectively. Citroen’s sales dipped 12.92% YoY and gained 11.2% MoM, while Jeep’s was opposite at 34.4% YoY gain and 20.78% MoM dip.
