Overall, car sales in January 2025 looked promising, with YoY gain of 2.10% and MoM gain of 25%

Total car sales in January 2025 were at 4,01,538 units, as compared to 3,93,471 units in January last year. Car sales in December 2024 were at 3,21,345 units. Among the 14 carmakers, 7 have positive YoY growth. Top gainers include Maruti Suzuki, Mahindra, Toyota, Skoda, MG Motor and Kia.

Sales of Maruti Suzuki in January 2025 were at 1,73,599 units. YoY gain is 4.1%, as compared to 1,66,802 units sold in the corresponding period last year. MoM growth is higher at 33.4%, as compared to 1,30,115 units sold in December 2024. Maruti’s market share increased from 42.4% to 43.2% in January 2025.

At number two in the list is Hyundai, with sales of 54,003 units in January. YoY growth is negative at -5.4%, as compared to 57,115 units sold in the corresponding period last year. However, Hyundai has registered an impressive 27.9% MoM growth, as compared to 42,208 units sold in December 2024. Hyundai’s market share in January is down by -1.1%, from 14.5% to 13.4%.

Mahindra takes third spot, with sales of 50,659 units in January. Both YoY and MoM numbers are positive, at 17.6% and 22.3%, respectively. Sales in January last year and December 2024 were at 43,068 units and 41,424 units, respectively. Among all carmakers, Mahindra has the highest market share gain at 1.7%. It has improved from 10.9% to 12.6% in January.

Tata Motors is at fourth spot, with sales of 48,075 units in January. YoY growth is negative at -10.4%, as compared to 53,635 units sold in the corresponding period last year. MoM growth is decent at 8.7%, as compared to 44,221 units sold in December 2024. Tata market share is down by -1.7%, from 13.6% earlier to 12.0% in January 2025.

At number five is Toyota, with sales of 26,178 units in January. YoY gain is 12.9%, as compared to 23,197 units sold in January last year. MoM growth is at 5.2%, as compared to 24,887 units sold in December 2024. Toyota gained 0.6% market share in January, up from 5.9% to 6.5% in January 2025.

Kia posts triple-digit MoM growth

At number six in the list is Kia, with sales of 25,025 units in January. YoY growth is modest at 5.3%, as compared to 23,769 units sold in the corresponding period last year. MoM growth is highest in the list at 179.4%, as sales in December 2024 were only 8,957 units. Kia market share in January 2025 has improved by 0.2%, from 6% to 6.2%.

Honda Cars India is seventh, with sales of 6,103 units in January 2025. Both YoY and MoM numbers are negative at -29.7% and -10.6%, respectively. Honda has lost -0.7% market share, from 2.2% earlier to 1.5% in January 2025. MG Motor is at 8th spot with sales of 4,455 units in January. While YoY growth is 16.5%, MoM growth is down by -40.7%. MG Motor market share has improved by 0.1% in January.

Next in the list is Skoda, with highest YoY growth at 73.9%. Sales have improved from 2,377 units in January 2024 to 4,133 units in January 2025. However, Skoda’s MoM growth is negative at -9.2%. Market share has improved by 0.4%. At number ten in the list is Volkswagen, with sales of 3,344 units. YoY growth is positive at 2.4%, but MoM growth is down by -30.1%. There is no change in Volkswagen’s market share in January 2025.

Renault takes 11th spot (2,780 units), followed by Nissan (2,404), Citroen (470) and Jeep (310). All four have negative YoY growth. In MoM terms, Renault and Citroen have negative growth, whereas Nissan and Jeep have positive growth of 13.5% and 8.4%, respectively.
