Chennai Super Sonics announced as fifth team for inaugural 2012 i1 Super Series

The i1 Super Series is all set to get going in January 2012, bringing to India it’s very own motorsport league. Today, a fifth city franchise was announced in Chennai. The Chennai Super Sonics franchise will be owned by K Raghu Ramakrishna Raju, Chairman, Ind-Barath Power Infra., an infrastructure development company.

Amongst other Indian motorsports league franchise owners are Tollywood actor Nagarjuna for Hyderabad, Arindam Chaudhuri for Delhi, Arjun Baljee and Rudra Dalmia for Bangalore, and Bollywood Superstar Shahrukh Khan for Mumbai. The i1 Super Series comes in a popular city based franchisee formatof 9 participating teams across India. The two member teams will have a driver of Indian origin and an International driver, adding a new aspect to Indian Motorsports.

Promoted by promoted by Machdar Motorsport, the i1 Super Series, a sports car racing series in India will consist of 12 races with 9 teams representing different Indian cities. The inaugural 2012 i1 Super Series season begins this Jnuary, and will be held across India, UAE, Malaysia, Bahrain and Qatar. Teams would drive the Radical Sportscars’ SR3 roadster, and are competing for a USD 2 Million prize.

CEO of the i1 Super Series, Mr. Darshan M had this to say. “I am very pleased to announce that we have finalised on our team owner for the Chennai for the upcoming i1 Super Series to take place in January, 2012. Raghu is a big motorsports fan and was adamant that he be a part of the i1 Super Series. Chennai is the motorsport capital of India with rich history in the sport and Raghu is keen to ensure that his team lives up to the standards.”

Chairman Ind – Barath Power Infra and owner of the Chennai Super Sonics franchise, K Raghu had this to say. “The i1 super series has the makings of a great sporting league that will gain popularity and a fan following like no other. I am happy to be associated with this sporting event and I am confident that with the support and encouragement of Machdar Motorsports, this league will give an opportunity to budding drivers and motor sports buffs. Chennai has been the home of motorsports in India for a long time and the Chennai Super Sonics will do our best to make sure we stay on top.”
