UPDATE 18 Feb 2015 Chevrolet Spin MPV, which has been confirmed for launch in India, has been spied testing on Indian roads. The spy shots below, were clicked by Indian Autos Blog reader in Ahmedabad. GM India has a plant in Halal, which is about 120 kms from Ahmedabad.
16 Feb 2015 – The compact 7-seater personal MPV segment is booming in India and General Motors has decided to try their luck here. Chevrolet Spin MPV is a domestic Multi Utility Vehicle based on popular Chevrolet Beat hatchback’s platform, named Gamma II.
Chevrolet Spin MPV is already on sale in emerging markets like Indonesia and Brazil, where MPVs are generally highly favoured. Indian market has just recently been seeing tremendous demand for such cars, which has attracted products like Honda Mobilio, Datsun Go+ and the like. With Maruti Ertiga as the unshakable leader, more competitors will be joining the race soon, like Renault Lodgy Stepway in a few weeks. The South Korean carmaker will also make an entry into this lucrative space with Hyundai Hexaspace MPV in early 2016, right around the time when Chevrolet Spin will launch.
Chevy Spin also has a crossover version called Spin Active, with protective body cladding, special alloy wheels and spare wheel mounted on tail gate (just the usual pseudo-crossover conversion package). No word about Spin Active for India yet. Spin is offered with a 1.2 litre, 1.5 litre petrol, and 1.3 litre Fiat MultiJet diesel engines in its current markets.
