Hyundai Creta is the only one in the compact SUV sales charts to register positive growth in both YoY and MoM analysis
In the earlier post, we discussed sales of the sub-compact SUVs in the sub 4m segment like Brezza, Nexon, Venue, Sonet, etc. In this post, we will take a look at the sales registered by compact SUVs. This segment witnessed strong growth MoM. Total sales stood at 39,478 units in March 2023. The segment saw 28,813 units sold in March 2022 and 35,383 units in February 2023. This resulted in 37.01% YoY growth and 11.57% MoM growth. Volume growth stood at 10,665 units YoY and 4,095 units MoM.
Every participant, except Seltos, witnessed a positive growth MoM. In comparison, individual YoY growth was nothing to write home about, except for Creta. As a whole, compact SUV sales for the month of March 2023 saw decent growth in both YoY and MoM analysis.
Creta Led The Charts With 35.53% Market Share
Hyundai Creta sold 14,026 units last month and accounted for 35.53% of compact SUV sales. The 10,532 units sold last year and 10,421 units sold a month ago awarded Creta with 33.18% YoY growth and 34.59% MoM growth. Volumes grew by 3,494 units YoY and 3,605 units MoM. Creta is the only vehicle in this segment to score positive growth in both YoY and MoM analysis. It is the third highest-selling SUV in India after Brezza and Nexon.
Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara sold 10,045 units last month. It is inching closer to Creta’s sales with relatively steady growth. As opposed to 9,183 units sold a month before, Grand Vitara registered 9.39% MoM growth and holds 25.44% of the market share. Volume gain MoM is 862 units.
Kia Seltos is due for a facelift, currently under testing. In March 2023, it sold 6,554 units, witnessing a 22.12% YoY decline and an 18.20% MoM decline. It takes the 3rd spot in this list and accounts for 16.60% market share, down from 22.64%. Volume loss was 1,861 units YoY and 1,458 units MoM.
Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder sold 3,474 units and registered 5.05% MoM growth, gaining 167 units in volume. If we take combined figures for Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara and Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder, sales stood at 13,519 units accounting for 34.24% market share. Only marginally less than Creta’s standalone figures.
Skoda Volkswagen Sold 4,228 Units Combined
We have Skoda Kushaq in 5th place with 2,252 units sold. When compared to 2,499 units sold a year ago, Kushaq sales declined 9.88% YoY, losing 247 units in volume. That said, Kushaq saw 26.30% MoM growth as opposed to 1,783 units in February 2023 and gained 469 units in volume. Recently launched Kushaq Lava Blue Edition might bring more sales this month.
Volkswagen Taigun followed a similar pattern to its Czech cousin Kushaq. It sold 1,976 units in March 2023 and witnessed 16.97% YoY decline with 404 units lost in volume. But MoM analysis saw a gain of 19.25% with 319 units in volume growth. Combined, Kushaq and Taigun sold 4,228 units, accounting for 10.71% market share.
With S-Cross and Kicks out of the game, MG Astor takes the bottom position with 1,151 units sold last month. When compared to 2,248 units sold a year ago and 1,020 units sold a month before, Astor almost halved in sales YoY with a 48.80% decline and gained 12.84% MoM.
