OP Munjal passed away on Thursday following a brief illness at the Ludhiana’s Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH). His last rites will be performed at Ludhiana Model Town Extension cremation grounds at 5 pm on 14th August 2015.
The youngest of four brothers, Om Prakash Munjal was just 16 years of age when in 1944 the company started operations in Amritsar with an investment of INR 50,000. This small bicycle manufacturing unit is today India’s largest manufacturer of cycles with turnover of INR 1,634 crores while turnover of Hero Cycles Group has touched INR 2,222 crores.
Besides being known as the ‘Cycle Man’, OP Munjal or Bauji as he was fondly called, was the youngest among his brothers — Dayanand, Satyanand and Brij Mohan Munjal. He was also noted for his philanthropy. He was well versed in Urdu poetry besides art and culture and could instantly recite shayaris on special occasions.
The family hailed from Pakistan’s Kamalia Tehsil while they shifted to Ludhiana post independence in 1956. Despite his age, Munjal used to take rounds of the manufacturing unit each morning, interacting with administrative staff while he used to attend to clients during the day.
