The name Go, is derived from the first Datsun car, called DATGO. It was launched in Japan over a 100 years back. DATSUN stands for Dream Access and Trust. Designed in Japan, but built completely in India, the new Datsun Go comes with a close to 100% localization. Nissan officials did not reveal the exact figure, but they said that they no longer fear the fluctuation in Rupee value.
Target buyers will be first time car buyers. This has been the philosophy of Datsun. Even when the brand was first launched in Japan 100 years back, it was launched to give people the opportunity of mobility. Even today, Datsun comes with the same aspiration.
Datsun Go features seating capacity for 5, though there is room for 6th (thanks to the front row ambassador style seats), Nissan says it is not for a 6th passenger, but for extra space, to keep your mobile, laptop, handbags, etc. 5 door Go will be powered by a 1.2l petrol engine. Dimensions of the new car stand at 3785 x 1635 x 1485 mm (L x W x H), while the wheelbase is similar to that of Micra, at 2450 mm. The engine will power front wheels via 5 speed manual transmission.
Datsun Go is a practical car. Cost cutting is evident, but only where it could be done. For eg, just one wiper on windshield. Speaking at the unveiling, Carlos Ghosn, Nissan Motor President and CEO, said, “This is an historic day for Nissan Motor Company and for our customers and partners in some of the world’s fastest-growing markets. It’s also an exciting moment for many women and men here in India who – today – come one step closer to realizing the dream of purchasing a car.”
