Seeking to make a mark in the small car segment in India, which as on date is commanded by Maruti Suzuki (75% share) and Hyundai (22% share), Nissan reveals new plans which will further the growth of their Datsun brand.
To start with, the two Datsun cars – Go hatchback and Go MPV has helped Nissan increase its market share in the small car segment from 1% to 3%. All this, in just 1 year. In this 1 year, Datsun managed to sell about 17,000 cars; though this is much below expectation, it is still a start; says Nissan.
Positive about their growth plans, Nissan says, in 2016 we will launch Datsun’s third offering in India. Though they did not reveal what it will be, this is believed to be a compact SUV, based on the Redi-Go concept which was showcased at 2014 Delhi Auto Expo.
The entry level Datsun SUV will be based on an all new car platform CMF-A that also underpins the soon to be launched Renault XBA small car. Engine aboard this small SUV could be a 800cc, 3 cylinder petrol engine. The platform and engine are being developed by Nissan Renault alliance.
Apart from this, they also have extensive expansion plans, which will mainly focus in Tier II and Tier III cities. As on date, Nissan has 21 exclusive Datsun showrooms in the country, which they will increase to 60 by 2016. This will help Datsun establish itself as a independent car brand.
