The last few weeks saw Nissan India receive a lot of flak over their Datsun Go hatchback, which was stated as outright unsafe by Global NCAP. The individual body, even asked for Nissan to take the Datsun Go off the market. Nissan replied by saying that the crash test was unfair, and their car is much better on Active Safety, as compared to competition.
Anyways, this development has in no way hampered Nissan India’s plans of launching new cars under the Datsun name. For now, Nissan India plans to launch two new cars under the Datsun brand. The first is Go+ MPV. This is a seven seater variant of Go hatchback, which retails at a starting price of Rs 3.5 lakhs. This MPV is expected to cost under Rs 5 lakhs. This will be launched in the coming weeks. If we are to believe an insider, launch of Go+ MPV could take place by the end of this month.
The second car which is going to be launched under Datsun, will be a compact SUV. This will be based on the Redi-GO Concept which was displayed at the 2014 Delhi Auto Expo. According to Business Week magazine, launch will take place by May 2015.
Both these new Datsun cars will be powered by the same 1.2l petrol engine coupled with a 5 speed gearbox, which is seen on the Go hatchback. Also to follow, are the missing safety features. It is believed that Datsun will not offer standard safety features like ABS and airbags on both GO+ and compact SUV. This will enable them to launch these cars at a very aggressive price.
Datsun Go+ MPV will compete with the likes of Honda Mobilio and Maruti Ertiga, while the new Compact SUV will have compete with the likes of Ford EcoSport, Fiat Avventura, Toyota Etios Cross, and Volkswagen Polo Cross. This compact SUV is expected to be priced in between Go hatchback and Go MPV. To be manufactured at Renault-Nissan plant in Chennai, the cars will also be exported to other countries.Datsun Go compact SUV will be under 4 meter in length and aggressively priced.
