So how did the S4 land in India? There is an interesting story of how it arrived. Just the way many wondered, Audi India too wondered, would we find any buyers for S4? After all, what is the purpose of an A4 (review) look-a-like, which is about INR 20 lakh more expensive and consumes even more fuel. So they initiated a campaign on social media, titled ‘Vote for the S4 and bring it to India’. The Audi S4 campaign received tremendous response. A total of 600,000 fans voted on Facebook and this resulted in the company changing its marketing strategy to bring new Audi S4 to India.
Powered by V6 3.0 TFSI engine that generates 333 hp and 440 Nm torque, S4 does a 0-100 kmph in just 5 seconds, and has an electronically limited top speed 250 kmph. Power is delivered to all four wheels (quattro) by their seven speed S tronic dual clutch gearbox. Mileage as per company stands at 10.34 kmpl. This is impressive for the kind of power you are offered. We managed to get 6.5 kmpl, which included not-so-standard driving.
Once behind the wheel, you will be surprised how well the car behaves, even on patchy Indian roads, and then when you get onto the highway, all you would want to do is show how powerful and effortless the S4 is. The car is equally good on the track too. While driving around the Buddh International Circuit (during the R8 V10 Plus launch earlier this year), Audi S4 was a pleasant surprise. Not once did it give feeling of being over-powered, which is good for a road-worthy and everyday use sports sedan. Even while driving the car on rain soaked roads around Pune, it managed to keep itself firmly stuck to the road, thanks to the impressive quattro.
Dimensions are same as that of A4, which makes it difficult for the normal eye to differentiate between the two. But, a keener eye (and ear) is enough to separate the two and give you the ‘wow’ look. To start with, S4 comes with S badge on the front grille, V6T badge on the side, quad exhuasts, slightly different front and rear bumper, lower body panel rib, and 18″ alloys, bigger trunk lip. As the S4 sits lower than that of A4, there are underbody guards on the sides (below doors).
On the inside you will see specially crafted seats, which sit lower than the one’s in A4. They are also more comfortable. Space is enough for four. Though rear seats features headrest for 3, making 3 adults fit into the rear sits might get uncomfortable when you are in the mood to push the pedal and take on the curves.
Audi S4 also includes a hexagonal grille, xenon headlights and LED daytime lights, rear LED lights, exterior mirrors with silver finish, 5 drive modes (efficiency, dynamic, comfort, auto and individual), MMI navigations plus, 8 speakers, 3D graphics, and much more which is part of it’s state of the art infotainment system. Plus, the sound of the car itself is also a feature in itself, which keeps tempting you to achieve higher revs. All this packaged in an impressive price, makes S4 perfect for everyday use, including a little fun on the side.
