Audi A4 Review – First Drive

The new Audi A4, Audi’s best selling sedan, offers a number of advantages over its predecessor in terms of features, performance, technology and surprisingly even price. The base model, 1.8 TFSI, priced at Rs.27.33 lakhs (ex showroom Maharashtra), is a good Rs.60,000 to Rs.70,000 cheaper than the outgoing model which considering present hike in Euro is rather strange.

Audi A4 is available at all company dealerships across the country and due to its sleek looks and superior technological features is more appealing to the younger generation who are on the lookout for status and position. Fuel efficiency is at a premium as are its new and improved lines and classy interiors which is sure to draw a great deal of attention. Audi A4 is offered in three variants. The first is a 1.8 TFSI petrol that is priced at Rs.27.33 lakhs, a 2.0 TDI engine priced at Rs.29.38 lakhs and a 3.0 TDI V6 diesel engine priced at Rs.39.06 lakhs. All prices are ex-showroom Maharashtra.

The A4 1.8 TFSI engine sports two injectors per cylinder, one for direct and the other for indirect injection. The direct injectors are operational at startup while the indirect injectors work at low loads and lower speeds thus improving emission and fuel efficiency. This improved engine now offers 168 bhp up 10 bhp as compared to the older engine and 32.6 kgm of torque from 1400 to 3700 rpm. Acceleration from 0 to 100 kmph is possible in 9.5 seconds. Being smaller in size helps where reduction of wind noise and drag is concerned and this enables the A4 to offer 12.5 kmpl on the highway and 8.5 kmpl in city limits.

Audi A4 weights 1470 kgs, measures 4701mm in length, 1826mm in width and 1427 mm in height and sits on a 2808mm wheelbase. It possesses booth capacity of 480 liters and fuel tank capacity of 63 liters. Audi A4 is 4.5 inches longer than its outgoing model and larger than most of its rivals. Space is at a premium specially in the rear seating area. Engine is moved to the centre of the car so as to offer better weight distribution and better driving dynamics. The company has keenly concentrated on enhanced safety features where the new Audi A4 is concerned.

This model includes dual front, side thorax and side curtain airbags along with stability and traction control systems and electronic brake force distribution with brake assist. Cabin details remain unchanged though there are changes seen in the form of a three spoke electromechanical steering wheel instead of the earlier four spoke hydraulic one.

A redesigned ignition key, air conditioning, power windows and infotainment control are enhanced in both looks and performance while the A4 also gets concert radio with 8 speakers, color monitor, DVD player and a Drive Select Option that lets the driver choose between Comfort, Dynamic, Individual and Efficiency.

Audi A4 competes with the BMW 3 Series, and Mercedes Benz C Class in India. The German car manufacturer has also offered an all in one package called New Audi Car Life for the new Audi A4. This includes car finance, insurance service plan and extended warranty all at one go.
