Ducati recalls Diavel Motorcycles over side stand issue
Side stand’s bending or breaking causing Ducati Daivel bikes to fall over and cause injury is what has prompted Ducati to recall over 27 such cruiser motorcycles manufactured during the period May 25, 2012 to June 28, 2012. Italian motorcycle maker, Ducati has announced this recall and will be intimating owners to bring in their bikes while authorized dealers have been instructed to carry out replacements of side stand free of charge.
Reports of side stand breaking and motorcycle toppling over have been noted. This could cause injury or harm to owners or passersby where the bike has been parked. Besides this, damage to the vehicle or a bent side stand will trigger the side stand safety switch, which would lead to the bike failing to start or stall without warning, is also a possibility.
Owners of Ducati Diavel motorcycles who made their purchase within this time frame are requested to contact their nearest dealer or contact the company besides contacting the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on their hotline number 1-888-327-4236 or visit www.safecar.gov. Ducati recall number is RCL-12-005. Ducati Daivel bikes weigh 210 kgs. Displacement stands at 73.13 cubic inches while engine is a V2 four stroke. Potential Number of Units Affected:
Ducati is recalling certain model year 2012-2013 Diavel motorcycles manufactured from May 25, 2012, through June 28, 2012. The side stand may bend or break.
The side stand could bend or break in the pivot area, allowing the motorcycle to fall over, increasing the risk of personal injury to the operator or others near the motorcycle. Even without falling over, a bent sidestand may interfere with the proper operation of the sidestand safety switch, preventing the bike from starting or causing the bike to stall without warning.
Ducati will notify owners, and authorized dealers will replace the side stand, free of charge. Ducati has not provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact Ducati at 1-800-231-6696 or through their website at www.ducati.com.
Ducati’s recall number is RCL-12-005. Customers may contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle safety hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY: 1-800-424-9153); or go to http://www.safercar.gov.
Models: MY 2012 and 2013 Diavel (All Versions)
Description of the technical problem:
It has been found that due to a supplier error, a structurally non-compliant side stand containing a possible forging defect has been installed on a batch of 2012 and 2013 Diavel motorcycles. Motorcycle stability could be compromised while resting on the side stand resulting in damage to the motorcycle and a potential hazard to the rider. Additionally, severe deformation of the stand, or breakage could interfere with the side stand’s safety switch operation causing the motorcycle to fail to start and/or run properly.
