easyCar will allow car owners to rent vehicles from 2012

easyJet founder Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou and lastminute.com founder Brent Hoberman have come together to bring forth their easyCar venture. To be launched in 2012, easyCar permits one to book slots in their neighbors’ vehicles through smartphone apps. This subsidiary of the existing easyCar online car rental company will introduce car sharing. Aimed at being a cheaper option when compared to regular car rentals, the startup will enable car owners make money through car rentals.

The easyCar car club looks to test 1,000 cars around the London area in spring. Haji-Ioannou had this to say about easyCar. “It could prove to be the future of car rental and ownership in cities of the future”. “Rather than having to buy the cars to be rented and pay the ownership costs, this business model relies on the fact that there are plenty of under-used cars on the road already and that is lazy capital that can be put to work again.”

Keeping in mind the current economic meltdown Hoberman thinks 2012 is the right time to launch easyCar. Car owners would decide their rental price. easyCar would be responsible for car insurance at the time of renting and vehicles will be fitted with automatic entry and tracker systems. The car rental venture would be greener than regular car hire because car sharing/car pooling would keep 10 cars off the road for every vehicle that signs up with the esayCar club, thereby reducing personal car emissions by over 40%. Those looking to hire a car would benefit from cheaper vehicles that are close to their pick up point.

Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou added, “Rather than having to buy the cars to be rented and pay the ownership costs, this business model relies on the fact there are plenty of under-used cars on the road already, and that is lazy capital that can be put to work again.” While further details are not available presently, those interested could pre-register online.
