Owing to personal and family reasons, Peter Honegg the current CEO and Managing Directo of Mercedes Benz India will be retuning to Germany and Eberhard Kern will take over the reins from him. This will be effective from the 1st of December 2012. Honegg who has been a part of Mercedes Benz India from 1st January 2011, had a tough job of managing the company in a volatile and competitive luxury car market. During the time he was in office, the brand suffered greatly and was pushed down to the third place by the likes of BMW and Audi.
The first year of his tenure, saw Mercedes Benz post growth figures of 27.5 percent which gradually dissipated in 2012 due to intense competition from rival brands. Under the MBC 2020 strategy, Honegg planned a strategic comeback for the company and was instrumental in directing the long term growth of the company. Under his guidance, Mercedes Benz invested about 300 crore for a new paint shop and assembly line and also announced its move of entering into the compact car market.
Kern, who will be replacing Honegg, has a rich history working for Mercedes. He has held many management positions in the company headquarters, retail network and held term at Mercedes Benz Russia and is currently head of Mercedes Benz – Taiwan. Today Mercedes Benz India launch the new M-Class 250 CDI that is being manufactured locally in the country. Ex-Showroom price of M Class 250 CDI: RS. 46.50 lakhs – Delhi. The Paint Shop at Chakan Plant Pune too was introduced today.
