India’s electric car market witnessed a strong surge in calendar year 2025, with total retail sales reaching 1,76,817 units, marking a sharp year-on-year growth of 77 per cent over CY 2024. According to retail sales data released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA), electric car sales more than doubled in scale compared to the previous year, underlining rising consumer acceptance, improved product choices, and expanding charging infrastructure across the country.

Tata Motors continued to lead the electric car segment in 2025, retailing 70,004 units. While growth was relatively measured compared to some newer entrants, Tata still posted a 13.3 per cent YoY increase and retained a dominant 39.6 per cent market share. JSW MG Motor emerged as the biggest gainer in absolute terms, clocking 51,387 units during the year. This represented a massive 135.6 per cent growth over CY 2024, helping MG capture over 29 per cent of the EV market, firmly establishing it as the second-largest electric car player in India.

Mahindra recorded one of the strongest growth trajectories in 2025, with electric car sales rising to 33,513 units from just over 7,100 units in the previous year. This translated into an exceptional 369 per cent YoY growth, giving Mahindra a healthy 19 per cent share of the electric car market. Hyundai also saw rapid expansion, retailing 6,726 electric cars, up more than seven times compared to CY 2024, though its overall market share remained under 4 per cent.

Among premium and niche brands, BYD sold 5,402 units, growing 88.3 per cent YoY, while BMW registered strong momentum with 3,195 units and a 160 per cent growth rate. Kia too recorded a sharp rise, selling 2,730 electric cars, up nearly 558 per cent compared to the previous year, albeit from a low base. Mercedes-Benz posted modest growth at 22.4 per cent with 1,168 units, while Citroën saw a significant decline of nearly 55 per cent, closing CY 2025 at 871 units.

Vinfast and Tesla – New Entrants

New entrants also made their presence felt in 2025. VinFast recorded 826 retail units in its first year of sales, while Tesla entered the Indian retail charts with 225 units. Volvo’s electric car sales dipped slightly to 389 units, and the ‘Others’ category contributed 381 units, remaining largely flat year-on-year.

Overall, the CY 2025 data highlights a clear acceleration in India’s electric car adoption, driven by strong growth from both mass-market and premium manufacturers. With increased competition, broader portfolios, and rising awareness, the electric passenger vehicle segment is steadily moving from early adoption toward mainstream acceptance.
