Dimensions – Ford EcoSport being a proper crossover, not a redesigned or re-labelled hatchback, measures significantly more than other pseudo-SUVs trying to compete, at 3999 x 1765 x 1708 (Length x Width x Height). Even wheelbase is longest in EcoSport, then comes tire size, kerb weight and fuel tank capacity, at highest in segment. Fiat Avventura competes closely in terms of length, wheelbase and tire size. Weight of Avventura follows EcoSport right behind, which is not a good quality, in both. Volkswagen Cross Polo weighs somewhat lesser, being a direct hatchback (so called) conversion, and Toyota Etios Cross treads lightest. Tire sizes of last two are smallest and identical at 185/60-R15. What matters a lot in a SUV touted product is ground clearance. Fiat Avventura has that one highest at 205 mm, trumping EcoSport which has only 200 mm gap. Toyota Etios Cross measures 174 mm from road and Volkswagen Cross Polo has a deplorable span of just 165 mm from ground.
Engine & Mileage – Ford EcoSport and Toyota Etios Cross have 3 engine options each, both having two petrol motors and one diesel mill each. Fiat Avventura gets the bigger petrol motor coming with Punto EVO along with its acclaimed diesel plant, while Volkswagen Cross Polo is offered in diesel version only, that too in only one variant. Long story short, Ford EcoSport has most powerful and torquiest petrol engine, while Cross Polo wins diesel race. Same 1.0 litre EcoBoost engine in the Ford shows maximum mileage on paper, of 18.88 kmpl, while the most fuel efficient of diesel powered variants is Etios Cross, claiming 23.59 kmpl.
Price – Most affordable of the lot is Etios Cross, but the least expensive closer-to-SUV product is Fiat Avventura, starting at Rs. 5.99 lakhs (ex-showroom New Delhi). Ford EcoSport starts at Rs. 6.46 lakhs and Cross Polo is priced at Rs. 7.90 lakhs. Top end Avventura wears price tag of Rs. 8.17 lakhs, which is significantly more expensive than pseudo-crossovers but cheaper than EcoSport.
