A heavily camouflaged test mule of the Fiat C-SUV (codenamed 551) has been photographed by an Instagram user who goes by the name REC Live while it was being shipped from Brazil to the US. FCA’s Brazilian subsidiary seems to have been given the primarily responsibility of the compact crossover’s development but it seems that it’s states-bound to receive input’s from the FCA’s team there.
Destined to become a single product replacement for the Jeep Compass and Patriot, the Jeep C-SUV will slot between the smaller Renegade and bigger Cherokee. The Brazilian media reports that the vehicle is based on the Fiat Toro pickup’s platform.
Powertrain lineup too would be carried over from the pickup which means the Brazilian version would see a flex-fuel version of the 2.2-litre TigerShark engine. The diesel engine of choice would be the 2.0-litre MultiJet-II engine. Both manual and automatic transmissions would be on offer. A 4×4 system goes without saying.
India would be one of the main production bases for the C-SUV, perhaps the only base for RHD variant. FCA has already announced expansion plans for the Ranjangaon plant (co-owned by Tata Motors) to accommodate the crossover.
Design-wise, though the camouflaged prototype doesn’t give anything away readily, one can expect the 551 to be a miniature version of the Grand Cherokee.
