ET has learnt that the Ford EcoSport base model for India will be priced from Rs 5.9-6.0 lakhs, which is cheaper by a good Rs 20,000 than what the Renault Duster was introduced back in July 2012. (Duster price today, starts from 7.69 lakhs).
The top of the line variant of Ford EcoBoost will be priced in the Rs 9 lakhs bracket, which is much lesser than Duster’s Rs 11.49 lakhs price tag. With such aggressive price structure, Ford India will not only challenge SUVs in the segment, but also hatchbacks and sedans like Hyundai i20 and Maruti Suzuki Swift DZire, whose top end variants are priced at Rs 7.79 lakhs and Rs 7.50 lakhs, respectively.
All said and done, these comparisons are good on paper, unless we have an official launch or price from Ford India, these points which are in favor of EcoSport are baseless.
Ford India had stated that the EcoSport will be launched by early 2013, but that has not happened. In fact, Ford India is still mum on the launch date of the EcoSport. All they have to offer is a marketing campaign which will last for 4 months and a tentative launch by June 2013 end. As part of this campaign, EcoSport will be displayed across the malls in 12 different cities. This week its Bangalore and Chandigarh’s turn.
In the meantime, all these customers who were waiting to buy the EcoSport, since it was displayed on the eve of 2012 Delhi Auto Expo, are losing their patience. Some of them have already bought a Duster, i20 or DZire. Ford India is not only turning their customers away, but are also hurting their image by delaying the launch of EcoSport.
