Built at Ford India’s plant in Chennai, the EcoSport compact crossover has been amongst the best selling car in the segment since it’s launch. To be exported to 62 countries by 2017, the all-new EcoSport was not expected to be launched in the US, probably because it was an under 4 meter car. But does the recent sighting imply that the American car maker has decided to launch the EcoSport in the US?
Powered by the award-winning 1.0l EcoBoost engine, Ford builds EcoSport at two of their plants, one in Brazil, the second in Chennai. The 1.0l EcoBoost variant is only manufactured at their plant in Chennai.
At the launch of EcoSport in India, Ford had stated that the EcoSport dimensions are same, not matter which country it is sold in. Considering that in the US, a sub-4 meter EcoSport might not be pleasing, is it possible that the car is over 4m, specially made for the US? Also, if Ford does decide to go ahead with the launch of EcoSport in the US, will they manufacture it in Brazil or India? Or will they set-up a new line in the US itself?
If launched in the US, the EcoSport will be placed as an entry level car, slotted below the Escape. Speaking about launching EcoSport in the US, Jim Farley, Global Head of Sales, Marketing, Service at Ford, told AutoNews, “We certainly have that ability. We’re studying it very, very closely.”
A poll by AutoBlog revealed that the consumers in the US are excited about the 1.0l EcoBoost variant, if that’s the case, will it be India that will be manufacturing an American car, for America?
