2016 Ford Endeavour (Everest) catches fire during test drive in Australia

ford endeavour catches fire

Ford Endeavour SUV is expected to be launched in India in the coming weeks.

The incident occurred late Tuesday at Redhead Road near Newcastle along the NSW central coast just 175 kms north of Sydney. A brand new Ford Endeavour (known as Everest in Australia), while on test drive was completely gutted in the blaze. Ford Australia is conducting further investigations into the incident.

The recently launched new Ford Endeavour SUV was being tested by New Corp Australia’s motoring journalist Peter Barnwell when warning lights on the instrument display went blank and the engine shut down. Bringing the car to a stop, Barnwell noted flames spewing out of the bonnet.

The fire brigade which arrived in just five minutes took around twenty minutes to bring the fire under control as some material would not extinguish. Explosions were heard and flying shrapnel rocketed some 50m down the road. The fire spread over the entire SUV, all the way from the front to the rear while completely gutting the entire cabin.

Ford Australia is looking into the incident but is yet to announce a recall. If a recall does happen, it will not only affect the Endeavour SUV but also a host of Ford Ranger UVs as they share the same engine, large number of parts and platform besides electrical system. The wrecked Ford Endeavour SUV will be making its way to Ford Australia engineering headquarters in Melbourne where the cause of the fire will be thoroughly investigated.

2016 Ford Endeavour made global debut earlier this year. Specially designed and built for the South East Asian markets, the new Endy is all-set to be launched in India, where it has been spied on test on multiple occasions. Built on a new platform, which has made the SUV lighter and stronger, 2016 Endeavour gets new range of engines as well.

In India, Endeavour is expected to be launched in two diesel engine options – 2.2 liter generating 158 hp and 385 Nm torque, while the other will be a 3.2 liter 5-cyl engine generating 197 hp and 470 Nm. The former will be offered in both 6 MT and 6 AT gearbox option, the latter will only be offered with 6 AT option.
