Ford Fiesta sales cross 41 lakh

Ford Fiesta hatchback is undoubtedly the bestselling vehicle in the United Kingdom. First launched in 1976, sales of Ford Fiesta as on July 2014 has reached the 4,115,000 units mark. For 27 out of the 37 years that Ford Fiesta has been in circulation it has been at the top of the small car segment and overtook Ford Focus in 2009 as the bestselling car in Britain.

Ford Fiesta sales cross 41 lakhThe first generation Fiesta weighed around 800 kgs and was fitted with a 950cc four cylinder petrol engine offering 46 PS peak power. This engine was capable of 37.7 mpg (16.02 kmpl) and auto emissions of nearly 150 g/k. Today’s Ford Fiesta model gets a 1.0 liter 100 PS EcoBoost engine and weighs nearly 1,100 kgs. Despite this added weight, the new Ford Fiesta is capable of fuel efficiency of 65.7 mpg (27.92 kmpl) and just 99 g/km of CO2 emissions.

Most buyers in the UK opt for the turbocharged 1.0 liter EcoBoost engine and nearly all buyers prefer the higher level spec models such as Zetec, Zetec S, Titanium, Titanium X and ST models which come in with Ford SYNC voice-controlled connectivity system.

In Britain, price of the Zectec model is at £12,945 (Rs 13.21 lakhs) and comes in with features to include MyKey speed limiting features, Radio/CD with USB connectivity, remote central locking and power windows. Safety features abound on this model to include electrically operated and heated door mirrors, Hill Launch Assist, Electronic Stability Program and headlight courtesy delay.

In India, the Fiesta hatchback is not on offer, only sedan is on offer. It was launched earlier this year, on only diesel engine option. Here is its review.
