From first to last – Lewis Hamilton loses pole position due to rule violation: Revised Grid Positions for 2012 Formula One Spanish Grand Prix
Earlier yesterday, at the final qualifying, McLaren F1 driver Lewis Hamilton posted a lap time of 1:21.707, which also gave him the pole position. Lewis’s laptime was more than half a second faster than second placed Williams-Renault driver Pastor Maldonado’s lap time of 1:22.285.
Later, after Lewis posted his best time in Barcelona, he was ordered to stop the car right there on the track, by his team on the radio. The team ordered Lewis to do so because the car did not have enough fuel to come back to the pits on its own power.
FIA rule requires all cars to submit a liter of fuel after qualifying is over for sampling purposes. Lewis’s car did not have any, and because of which the former British World Champion is awarded a penalty and will start today’s race from the last position.
Lewis was in a very good position to win the Spanish Grand Prix, as of the last 10 races, 9 have been won from pole. But now, Maldonado, the 27-year-old Venezuelan F1 driver has his first pole and also the chance to win his first F1 Grand Prix race.
After the race, FIA stated, “A team member had put an insufficient quantity of fuel into the car, thereby resulting in the car having to be stopped on the circuit in order to be able to provide the required amount for sampling purposes. As the amount of fuel put into the car is under the complete control of the competitor, the stewards cannot accept this as a case of force majeure. The Stewards determine that this is a breach of Article 6.6.2 of the FIA Formula One Technical Regulations and the Competitor is accordingly excluded from the results of the Qualifying Session. The Competitor is however allowed to start the race from the back of the grid.”
