Without divulging much, GM India has announced that it is gearing up for a ‘global reveal’ at the Auto Expo 2016. The company has also announced that key leadership of the global operations will be present at the event, indicating that the mystery exhibit in question is going to be a very significant product.
GM has been working on a family of compact cars – hatchback, compact sedan and crossover – based on a modular emerging market-specific platform (codenamed Amber). A design study of one of these cars is a viable candidate for the Expo. If we were to guess, we would put our money on a near production compact crossover concept, an advanced version of the Chevrolet Adra design study which world premiered at the previous edition of the expo.
GM India could surprise us with a global premiere of a compact sedan concept. Either way, we will only have to wait for a couple more weeks before knowing for sure.
The American automaker’s Indian operations are in a worrisome state to say the least and it is in a dire need of new products in the fast growing segments (sub-4m sedan and SUV). The new products should also be globally relevant so that GM India can improve its capacity utilization by ramping its export operations significantly.
GM India’s subtle teaser banner also reveals that the brand’s Auto Expo 2016 stall will host the new Chevrolet Camaro, Beat facelift and Spin MPV.
