Cars, motorcycles, buses, trains, shops, almost everything that came in the way of the protestors, was burnt to the ground. Protests which have continued for over a week has resulted in losses of over INR 20,000 crore, reveals Assochem.
Thousands of citizens have lost their earning source, with their shops looted or burnt or looted and then burnt. News channels are showing videos of such affected people crying their heart out in front of the camera. But there is no stopping these rioters. As of now, they are out roaming freely.
Auto industry itself is in a very delicate situation. Haryana produces half of India’s total cars and motorcycles produced. With Maruti suspending production at their two plants for two days, production loss of 20,000 units has already resulted in loss of crores of rupees.
If this was not enough, protesters have burnt down car dealerships in the state, stolen cars, and burnt down the dealerships. The idea was simple, loot what you can, what you cannot burn it down.
In Rohtak alone, damage to car dealerships, especially that of Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai has resulted in the loss of hundreds of crores. One such account, where the largest dealership of Hyundai in Haryana was looted, eyewitnesses reveal that a mob of over 500 people surrounded the dealership and started looting it. They stole cars, cash, damaged the property, and burnt the building down. They also stole over 100 cars which were parked in the yard.
In the meanwhile, the demonstrations show no signs of abatement. 5 persons have lost their lives to date and the Haryana Finance Minister’s house was set ablaze while the Army has been called in to take stock of the situation. The violence has also led to arson with a railway station, police station, bus stations and some building set on fire while the army had to use helicopters to have access to areas blocked due to the demonstrations.
