Best selling top 20 hatchbacks Oct 2019 – Maruti has 74% market share

Maruti Swift sales

When it comes to small cars, Maruti Swift has taken the lead in October 2019. The 19,409 units sold reflect 12.74 percent sales growth, up from 17,215 units sold a year earlier. However, Alto sales dropped 19.28 percent, down to 17,903 units from 22180 units sold in Oct ’18. A year earlier, Alto topped the segment sales chart.

Maruti has two more small cars in the list. WagonR takes 5th spot. Last month, Global NCAP awarded Maruti WagonR a 2-star safety rating, and evaluated it’s bodyshell unstable. However, it was business as usual for MSIL as WagonR sales grew 34.76 percent, up at 14,359 units from 10,655 units sold in Oct 18.

The positive sentiment could be attributed to festive fervour through the month. The brand’s newest launch S-Presso, has swiftly reached 6th spot at 10,634 units sold. Having launched as recently as the fag end of September, the company reported 5,006 units sold the month earlier. While Maruti continues to dominate the small car portfolio, it’s yet to be seen how big a dent, if any S-Presso makes to Alto and WagonR sales.

Yet another small MSIL car features on the list. However, following S-Presso launch, Celerio sales crumbled at a mere 3,669 units, down 60.38 percent from 9,260 units sold in Oct 2018. Hyundai Santro, another vehicle that fared poorly in its safety test, managed to secure only 2-stars. October 2019 sales fell to 5,855 units, down 31.80 percent from 8,535 units sold in October 2018. MoM sales grew 67.19 percent, up from 3,502 units sold in September 2019.
