Hero Maestro Edge vs Hero Duet vs Honda Activa vs TVS Jupiter

Hero Motocorp has just doubled its scooter portfolio with the introduction of Maestro Edge and Duet in a bid to increase its market share in the segment which currently stands at 13%. The new scooters are based on automaker’s first homegrown platform.

Here is an on-paper comparison of the new Heroes with their rivals. In the interest of brevity, we have shortlisted the most appropriate competitors – the segment leading Honda Activa and TVS Jupiter.

Dimensions and Weight

Despite sharing the platforms, the Maestro Edge and Duet have considerable disparity in dimensions. The former measures 1,841 mm in length, 695 mm in width, 1,190 mm in height and has a wheelbase of 1,261 mm while the latter measures 1,830 mm in length, 726 mm in width, 1,139 mm in height and has a wheelbase 1,245 mm.

TVS Jupiter is the second largest selling scooter in India.

In comparison, the Honda Activa 3G is 1,761 mm long, 710 mm wide, 1,149 mm tall and has wheelbase of 1,238 mm. The Jupiter is 1,834 mm long, 650 mm in width, 1,115 mm wide and has a wheelbase of 1,275 mm. The Heroes have a ground clearance of 155 mm while figures for the Honda and TVS stand at 153 mm and 150 mm respectively.

The Duet emerges as the heaviest scooter in this comparo with the top-end variant tipping the scales at 116 kg. The Activa and Maestro Edge weigh 110 kg, and the Jupiter is the lightest of the lot at 105 kg.

Engines and Transmissions

The 110 cc mark has become a norm in the automatic scooter segment so the difference in engine displacement is negligible. The Hero twins top the displacement chart at 110.9 cc, the Jupiter finishes second at 109.7 cc and the Activa has a displacement of 109.2 cc.

The newbies also emerge as the most powerful scooters in this comparo at 8.3 PS however, the competition is not far behind. The Activa and Jupiter produce 8 PS each. When it comes to torque, the Activa leads with 8.83 Nm followed by the Maestro Edge and Duet with 8.3 Nm and Jupiter with 8 Nm. A belt driven CVT is standard across the models.

Frame and Suspension

All the four scooters use underbone type frame. Save for the Activa 3G which still continues to employ spring loaded hydraulic front fork, the rest of the models featured in this tech spec comaparo sport telescopic forks. At the rear, the Heroes and the Honda use single spring loaded hydraulic shock absorber whereas the TVS features a gas charged unit.

Tyres and Brakes

Honda Activa is the largest selling scooter in India. It sells about five times more units than the Jupiter.
The Hero Duet and Honda Activa 3G employ 90/100-10 tyres at either end whereas the TVS Jupiter comes shod with 90/90-12 tyres with bigger wheels. The Hero Maestro Edge mixes 12- and 10-inch wheels with specs of 90/90-12 (front) and 90/100-10 (rear). All the four make do with front and rear drum brakes.

Prices

The Honda Activa 3G is priced at INR 49,400 and the Hero Maestro Edge starts at INR 49.500. The TVS Jupiter is the most affordable automatic scooter of this lot with a starting price of INR 47,989. The prices of the Hero Duet will be out in a few weeks time and expected it to undercut its rival from TVS. Prices mentioned here are ex-showroom, Delhi.
