Thanks to rising fuel prices, mileage figures are always a priority among Indian buyers (regardless of most price or vehicle segments)
The list gives a detailed account of India’s top 10 most fuel-efficient passenger vehicles. One can notice that it is always diesel cars that are the most fuel-efficient though their petrol-powered counterparts have technologically evolved a lot over the years. The 2019 sales comparison between either fuel types further proves it.
Honda Jazz Mileage
(Petrol:18.2km/l, Diesel: 27.3km/l)
The most fuel-efficient car on this list is the Honda Jazz premium hatchback. The five-seater car was launched in July 2018 and is priced from Rs.7.45 lakh. It is powered by a 1.2-litre i-VTEC petrol engine offering 18.2km/l and a 1.5-litre i-DTEC diesel engine offering an unparalleled mileage of 27.3km/l.
Hyundai Grand i10 NIOS Mileage
(Petrol: 20.7km/l, Diesel: 26.2km/l)
Another car among the leading fuel-efficient cars on sale in India is Hyundai’s Grand i10 NIOS which is priced from Rs 5.05 lakh. It is available in 15 variants, out of which 11 are manual and four are AMT. The hatchback gets its power from a 1.2-litre petrol engine offering 20.7 km/l and a 1.2-litre diesel engine capable of 26.2 km/l as per ARAI rating.
Honda City Mileage
(Petrol: 17.4km/l, Diesel 25.6km/l)
Honda Car India’s City sedan is powered by a 1.5-litre i-VTEC petrol engine offering 17.4km/l while its 1.5-litre i-DTEC engine returns 25.6 km/l. The 2020 Honda City is expected to launch sometime in April after the corona virus lockdown. It will be powered by the same engine line-up as seen on its current model with manual and CVT options but upgraded to comply with BS6 norms. The sedan is expected to be priced from Rs 10 lakh ex-showroom.
Honda WR-V Mileage
(Petrol: 17.5km/l, Diesel: 25.5km/l)
With similar fuel efficiency figures as for City, Honda Car India’s WR-V subcompact SUV is priced from Rs 8.15 lakh. The sub-four-metre SUV is powered by a 1.2-litre petrol engine capable of 17.5km/l or a 1.5-litre diesel engine offering 25.5 km/l. The 2020 Honda WR-V facelift goes on sale next month with BS6 engines and cosmetic updates. Bookings were opened at Rs 21,000.
Hyundai Aura Mileage
(Petrol: 20.5km/l, Diesel: 25km/l)
Hyundai Motor India’s Aura compact sedan has a starting price of Rs 5.8 lakh ex-showroom. It is based on Hyundai’s i10 Grand NIOS. Engine choices are the same: 1.2-litre petrol, 1.2-litre diesel and 1.0-litre turbo petrol. The engines come mated to a 5-speed manual and an optional 5-speed AMT (diesel). The compact sedan also gets a CNG option with a 5-speed manual.
Tata Altroz Mileage
(Petrol: 19km/l, Diesel: 25km/l)
Tata Motors launched its Altroz premium hatchback earlier this year. The car not only received five stars in Global NCAP crash tests but also claims to be one of the most fuel-efficient cars in the country. It is powered by a 1.2-litre petrol engine offering 19km/l or a 1.5-litre diesel engine capable of 25km/l. Both powertrains get a 5-speed manual transmission as standard and were BS6-compliant right from the time of launch.
Honda Amaze Mileage
(Petrol: 18.6 km/l, Diesel: 24.7 km/l)
The sub-four-metre Honda Amaze sedan is currently Honda Car India’s best-selling model. It comes in both petrol and diesel engine options and is infact the company’s first diesel product in India. Its 1.2-litre i-VTEC petrol engine returns 18.6km/l while the 1.5-litre i-DTEC diesel unit offers 24.7km/l (manual) or 21km/l (CVT).
Maruti Suzuki Baleno Mileage
(Petrol: 21km/l, ‘DualJet’ petrol: 23.87km/l)
Maruti Suzuki’s Baleno premium hatchback is a popular product due to its high fuel efficiency. It gets its power via a 1.2-litre K-Series petrol engine offering 21km/l or a 1.2-litre DualJet engine (mild hybrid) offering ARAI-certified fuel efficiency of 23.87km/l. Maruti Suzuki currently has no diesel engines in its line-up.
Tata Tiago Mileage
The Tiago, priced from Rs 4.60 lakh, is powered by a 1.2-litre Revotron petrol engine with 85bhp and 112Nm while offering 23.84km/l. The 1.05-litre, 3 cylinder diesel (69bhp and 140Nm) which came in the pre-facelift Tata Tiago has been discontinued.
Hyundai Venue Mileage
(Petrol: 18.27 km/l, Diesel: 23.7 km/l)
Hyundai Motor India’s Venue subcompact SUV is powered by a range of engine options: 1.2-litre petrol (18.27 km/l), 1.0-litre turbo petrol (18.15km/l) and 1.5-litre diesel (23.7 km/l). Hyundai India will introduce the BS6 compliant Venue diesel soon. Bookings for the same have already commenced.
