Honda Activa first scooter in India to cross 1 crore sales mark

A leading seller in the scooter segment ever since its debut in 2001, Honda Activa sales have increased from 55,000 units in FY 2001-02 to 2.1 million units as in FY 2014-15. With every second scooter buyer in the country opting for a Honda Activa, sales have zoomed in the past two months making the Honda Activa a market leader with 59% market share in its segment.

Honda Activa range consists of three models – Activa 3G, Activa-i and Activa 125. Each of these have gained the trust of 1 crore buyers in the country appealing to users due to outstanding performance, superior features and exclusive mileage. It is also the Honda Activa’s all metal body, convenient lift up independent cover mechanism, V-matic transmission, tubeless tyres and combi-brake system that instantly appeal to buyers.

Initially launched with a 7 bhp 102 cc engine, the Honda Activa received a mild facelift in 2009 with a new 8 bhp, 109cc engine. In 2013, the company introduced Honda Activa-i, while last year the Honda 125cc was introduced. It is these three models that allowed the company to attract larger number of buyers. In June 2015, a total of 1,96,913 units were sold, making Activa the top selling two wheeler in the country.

With 6 out of 10 scooters sold in the market being Honda models, the company became first scooter maker to have sold 250,000 scooters in the month of July 2015. It is due to this increasing demand that Honda is setting up a second scooter plant in Gujarat which is slated to be the world’s biggest scooter plant with capacity of 1.2 million units per annum. The Gujarat plant is expected to be commissioned in January 2016 while the company  also plans increased production at its Karnataka plant to meet demand.
