Honda discontinued the Civic nameplate from India in 2012. Though there were many fans of the Civic in India, it had to be discontinued due to lack of a diesel engine option and lower localization levels, which resulted in low sales of less than 100 units a month towards the last few months of Civic’s existence in India.
Earlier this year, Honda Cars India did talk about re-launching the new Civic and Accord in India. (Accord is another premium sedan which was discontinued from Indian market for similar reasons). This time when they spoke about getting the Civic and Accord back to India, it will be with higher localization levels, and also with a diesel engine option.
Another similar car from Honda, which had the same problems and was discontinued was the Jazz hatchback. But now, Honda is getting ready to launch the latest generation Jazz in India, with both – higher localization levels and a diesel engine option, albeit fixing the earlier problems. The same will be true for both Civic and Accord sedans in coming years as Honda gears up for product offensive and increase in sales.
Getting forward in this direction, latest generation Honda Civic hatchback was recently spied at company’s manufacturing plant in Tapukara, Rajasthan. Though there are no concrete plans to launch the Civic hatchback in India, but this model is probably being studied for R&D of India-spec Civic, which will be launched by 2016/17.
