Honda Motorcycle & Scooters India Limited (HMSI) plant in Manesar, Haryana have decided to counter rising diesel costs and enhance plant energy efficiency due to which they have installed GEs Gas Engines – Jenbacher cogeneration units which function on natural gas to offer 4 megawatts of power.
These Jenbacher units will go a long way in lowering energy costs at the Manesar plant as the company is on the road to enhancing production to keep up with increased demand. HMSI Manesar plant produces about 1.6 million scooters and motorcycles per annum while HMSI plant in Tapukara produces 1.2 million units and third HMSI plant in Bangalore has capacity to produce a further 1.2 million units. The company has set a target of increasing total plant production to 10 million units by 2020.
Following additional fuel costs, HMSI decided to replace four of the diesel generators with GE natural gas fuelled CHP units. Two generators of GE 2 MW Jenbacher J612 combines heat and power and was commissioned in March 2012 which will take the place of four of the present 1 MW generator sets which will result in a saving of about Rs.5.50 per unit or a 45.8% reduction. Besides reducing costs for the company, installation of GEs clean gas engines with modern exhaust controls will also lead to 48% reduction in gas emissions.
