Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) has reinforced its dedication to India’s ‘Make-in-India’ and ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiatives by achieving significant milestones in localization. With an indigenization roadmap in place, HMIL has localized over 1,200 key components and commenced the local assembly of EV battery-packs at a state-of-the-art facility in Chennai. These efforts have resulted in up to 92% localization in manufacturing and forex savings of over US $672 million (Rs 5,678 crore) since 2019.
Local Assembly of EV Battery-Packs
In collaboration with Mobis India Limited, Hyundai has inaugurated a battery-pack assembly plant within its Chennai facility. In its first phase, the plant boasts an annual capacity of 75,000 battery-packs, capable of assembling NMC (Lithium-Nickel-Manganese-Cobalt Oxide) and LFP (Lithium-Iron-Phosphate) battery types.
Hyundai Creta Electric will be the first model equipped with locally assembled battery-packs, marking a key milestone in Hyundai’s EV journey in India. This facility is a game-changer for Hyundai’s EV roadmap, enabling optimized battery costs and streamlined availability for locally produced EVs.
Localization Achievements
With a dedicated localization team engaging with over 194 vendors, Hyundai has localized 1,238 parts at its Chennai manufacturing plant. Key components such as alternators, alloy wheels, disc brakes, catalytic converters, and reverse parking assist sensors have achieved 100% localization. For the first time in India, advanced parts like Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), panoramic sunroof, and NOX sensors have been successfully localized.
Economic and Employment Impact
HMIL’s localization strategy has not only reduced reliance on imports but also created over 1,400 direct employment opportunities. By tapping into India’s skilled workforce and engineering resources, Hyundai continues to support the nation’s economic growth while enhancing its manufacturing capabilities.
Hyundai’s focus on indigenization will extend to its upcoming manufacturing plant in Talegaon, Maharashtra. The company aims to deepen its localized supplier network to further align with the government’s self-reliance initiatives.
Statement from Hyundai Leadership
Commenting on HMIL’s commitment towards localization, Mr. Gopalakrishnan Chathapuram Sivaramakrishnan, Whole-time Director and Chief Manufacturing Officer – HMIL said, “HMIL’s indigenization efforts are deeply in sync with Government of India’s ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ and ‘Make-in-India’ initiatives, and our localization strategy strives to constantly leverage India’s rich resources, skilled workforce and advanced engineering prowess, to develop world-class technology domestically. Commissioning of the HMIL and Mobis India Limited’s battery-pack assembly plant is a key milestone in our localization and EV roadmap. The Hyundai CRETA Electric becomes the first Hyundai EV manufactured in India to come equipped with battery-packs assembled at this very plant, making it a true game-changer.”
