Hyundai Elite i20 1.0-litre turbo petrol variant in pipeline

Hyundai Elite i20 1.0-litre turbo petrol variant is reported to be in the works for an international launch sometime later this year. Expected to be showcased at the Frankfurt Motor Show, the new variant would be powered by the three-cylinder motor which was first showcased at Paris Motor Show last year.

The engine is based on the 1.0-litre Kappa normally aspirated petrol motor which powers the European i10 but benefits from direct injection technology and a compact turbocharger. The new motor is capable of 120 PS and 175 Nm of torque. Both manual and automatic (could be a new 7-speed DCT) transmissions are expected to be on offer.

Camouflaged prototype of what could be the 1.0-litre turbo petrol variant was spotted testing in Europe recently. The test mule also had a mildly restyled front bumper which could be a part of a model year update.

Considering that it’s primary rival Maruti YRA (codename) is expected to offer a turbocharged 1.0-litre BoosterJet petrol motor in India, we can expect Hyundai India too to offer its latest powertrain eventually. This motor is expected to be available alongside the existing 1.2-litre four-cylinder Kappa petrol engine which produces 83 PS.
