The all-new Hyundai Elite i20 hatchback has posted best-ever March sales figures in India. Registering sales of 10,415 units, this is a huge jump of 136% when compared to sales of i20 in March 2014. This has pushed the car from the list of top 10 best selling cars to top 5 best selling cars in India.
Believe it or not- This is still short of Hyundai India‘s target of achieving 15,000 monthly sales from i20.
Maruti Suzuki’s Alto, Swift, DZire and WagonR claimed top four positions on the list of Top 5 cars sold in March 2015. Sales of both Alto and Swift dipped marginally but DZire and WagonR sales increased 4% and 5% respectively over sales in March 2014.
Judging by the Top 10 car sales March 2015, it has been found that larger cars are gaining ground in the Indian auto sector when compared to entry level and compact hatchbacks. Hyundai Motors claimed three spots on this list of Top 10 cars in March 2015 with Elite i20 at No. 5, Grand i10 at No 7 and Eon at No 9 even though sales of Grand i10 and Eon dipped by 17% and 19% respectively.
Honda Cars features on the list of Top 10 cars with Amaze sedan which also experienced a 10% increase in sales from 7,374 units in March 2014 to 8,128 units in March 2015. Honda City continued in 6th position in March 2014 and in March 2015 with 9,518 units sold in March 2014 and 9,777 units sold in March 2015.
Optimistic views were expressed for FY16 when the passenger vehicle segment is expected to grow by 5-7% with new model launches lined up. Though bigger models will hold appeal to first time buyers in the country, smaller cars will also be found equally attractive. Sales in rural markets will continue to be sluggish as has been seen in the last few quarters and especially more so now considering the recent and untimely rains.
