Hyundai getting ready to take on Tata Punch with Exter. Punch has carved out quite a huge market share in a short span of time. Exter will be the first serious attempt from a rival manufacturer to eat into the sales of Tata Punch.

Exter is short for “External”, suggesting that the newest Hyundai will focus on millennials and Gen-Z audiences with an outdoorsy appeal. It is codenamed Ai3 internally and is a larger offering as opposed to Casper. Rendering artist Pratyush Rout has rendered a production version of Hyundai Exter CUV, based on the leaked spy shots and official teasers.

The render perfectly captivates Exter’s essence based on spy shots. It gets a handsome face with H-shaped LED DRLs. Headlight is stacked vertically, below the DRLs. Side view reminds of Venue.

Grille is parametric-shaped as Venue, but it lacks chrome studs. There are two sporty design elements below the main grille. They are flanking Exter’s lower grille, adding a touch of aggression. The six-spoke design alloy wheels look modern and youthful.

Body cladding cuts down on visual bulk significantly. There is a power bulge on the render’s bonnet, adding a lot of muscle to Exter. It makes the bonnet appear higher than it is. Couple that with a flat-ish front fascia, lends a crossover SUV appeal. A-pillars are blacked-out like in the Venue. Roof rails make it look taller than it already is.

The recent spy shots of Exter were clicked in Sweden, where it was spotted testing on the snow. There is a possibility that Exter will get an AWD system.

Could There Be A 3-Row Exter With 7 Seats?

Hyundai Exter gets a tapering roof, getting taller towards the rear. It is visible in the spy shots from Sweden, and almost makes me wonder whether Hyundai stuffed a third row of seats in there. Manufacturers generally take this route to carve third-row head space. Something like a Renault Triber.

Ai3 is its internal codename and will launch during the upcoming festive season. At launch, it is likely to debut with a 1.2L 4-cylinder petrol engine developing 83 PS and 113.8 Nm, mated to a 5-speed MT or a 5-speed AMT. A 1.0L turbo petrol and a 1.2L CNG variant are likely to follow in the future. Hyundai Exter prices could range from Rs 6 lakh to Rs 12 lakh, ex-sh.
